Geometry

 Hello everyone!!

Today we are going to talk about what is geometry and how can it relate to cinema.

As we all know,  Geometry is the part of mathematics that studies the idealizations of space in terms of the properties and measurements of the geometric figures. It does not study real space itself, but ideal object, their properties, relationships and theories, built by abstraction of qualities of real space or other objects previously created ideals. We need to higlight that the physical reality is always less perfect that the geometric reality thought or ideal.

Geometry is always present in cinema, whether it is in an evident or subtle way. Geometry can be appreciated in films in the following ways:

  • Directors use lines, shapes, and geometric patterns to organize elements and create an atractive visual aesthetic.
  • Architecture and the different sets chosen to film the scenes can comunicate ideas and specific emotions depending on some geometric aspects such as lines or geometric shapes.
  • Designers and artists use geometric principles to animate characters, objects and sets. Also, geometric calculations to generate special effects, such as explotions, are needed.
  • Geometry can be used as simbols or metaphors to represent abstract concepts or emotions. For example, a circle can mean unity and perfection, while a triangle can mean conflict or inestability.
  • Geometry is also relevant for the action scenes choreography. Filmmakers take into account the chracters' positions, the camera angles and the physical movements that create smooth and visually coherent action scenes.

Thank you and see you in the next post!!
